Germany ranked the world’s most energy-efficient country

Berlin, July 26, 2016. A new report has rated Germany the most energy-efficient country in the world.

Now in its third edition, the ACEEE (American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy) report, ranks nations using 35 policy and performance metrics spread over four categories: buildings, industry, transportation, and overall national energy efficiency efforts. Germany scored the most points in the national efforts, buildings, and industry categories, while India tied with Italy and Japan for first place in transportation – the latter two countries were tied for second overall.

Energy efficiency has been frequently asserted as being the lowest-cost means of meeting new demand for energy. Yet energy efficiency remains massively underutilized globally, despite its proven multiple benefits.

The concept plays a key role in Germany’s energy policy, the Energiewende (Energy Transition), which aims to achieve a highly efficient and almost carbon neutral economy by 2050 at the latest. The National Action Plan on Energy Efficiency (NAPE), focuses on innovative industrial processes, energy-efficient buildings and products, and long-term investments.

“It is brilliant to see Germany’s efforts in energy efficiency recognized in the ACEEE scorecard,” said Rob Compton, Manager of Energy Efficiency and Smart Cities at federal economic development agency Germany Trade & Invest.

“Germany has a wide range of funding programs in this area ranging from energy efficiency in buildings and industry through to generous specific programs, for example in heat recovery. This has caught the interest of international investors: If your company works in this field, Germany has consistently been a world leader and is well worth a closer look.

“In the long term, we can expect Germany to step up its efforts as it moves towards its target of halving primary energy consumption by 2050.”
