World’s best coal shovellers hail from Tasmania

Tasmania is home to more than wee devils, it’s also the land of the world’s best coal shovellers.

Australian Mal Woods was the big winner in both the singles and doubles competition receiving a silver shovel trophy for his efforts last Saturday.

The town of Fingal, in the northeast of the island with a population of about 360 people, has hosted the world coal shovelling championships every March for the past 32 years.

Participants must heave a half ton of coal into a skip onto a one-metre-high scale during a timed contest.
