Telstra launches Smart Camp Services for the resources sector

Employees living in remote mining sites can now keep in touch, remain informed and be entertained through a single service being launched by Telstra.

The Telstra Smart Camp Services™ provides a telephone service, television channels, movies on demand and a high-speed broadband connection delivered out of the Telstra cloud to individual IPTV set-top-boxes.

John Paitaridis, Executive Director, Telstra Enterprise and Government, said the Telstra Smart Camp Services™ were developed in consultation with the resources sector to meet growing demand for personal communication, entertainment and training services on mining sites.

“Telstra Smart Camp Services™ is a new way for workers living in remote sites to stay connected with their loved ones and receive the latest entertainment,” Mr Paitaridis said.

“Mining companies using our high speed Telstra Next IP^® network can now connect their accommodation rooms with a set-top-box that provides a telephone service, TV, movies on demand and a high speed broadband connection all delivered out of the Telstra cloud.

“This service helps bring modern comforts to remote mining sites. This not only enables workers to keep connected and entertained, it also helps mining companies differentiate themselves in the industry and attract and retain employees in a highly competitive labour market,” Mr Paitaridis said.

The new service, delivered via an IPTV set-top box, provides access to free-to-air TV, Subscription TV and movies on demand. The set-top box includes a high-speed internet connection, as well as a Telstra IP telephone enabling workers to keep in touch with family and friends. Training services can also be delivered through the service, such as viewing Occupational Health and Safety videos.

The Telstra Smart Camp Services™ are delivered direct from the IP network, simplifying the IT requirements that mines need to manage on-site, often in very difficult-to-service, hot and dusty remote locations. By hosting it in the Telstra cloud, companies only need to have minimum hardware onsite, thereby reducing operating costs and simplifying the company’s IT maintenance needs.

Telstra Smart Camp Services™ is a managed solution that can be rapidly scaled up or down to suit the requirements of mining organisations, enabling the quick delivery of these services. The service is suitable for individual accommodation rooms, communal areas and administration areas and is only available on the Telstra Next IP^® network.
