Hundreds strike at Glencore’s coal mine in South Africa

About 500 workers belonging to the South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have downed tools at Glencore Plc (LON:GLEN)’s Koornfontein coal mine in a dispute over pay.

A union leader told The Citizen that the strike began on Friday after talks over the structuring of packages for employees who face lay offs hit a roadblock.

The NUM is also seeking permission to launch protest strikes at other Glencore operations.
