Peru villagers march against Barrick after police killing

RPP reports more than 1,000 residents of Jangas, a district located in Huaraz in the Ancash region of Peru, are demanding that Barrick leave the region after police killed a resident who held demonstrations against the company.

The villagers told the press that the water treatment plant that Barrick built is contaminated and that they will not accept the distribution of the water from the plant.

Barrick operates the 14-year old Pierina surface mine approximately 10 air kilometers north of Huaraz at an average elevation of 4,100 meters.
