Southern Copper, a branch of mining conglomerate Grupo Mexico, still expects to start up exploitation at its long-delayed Tia Maria copper project in Peru by the end of next year, a spokesperson told reporters on Monday.

Southern Copper spokesperson Paul Lostaunau spoke to journalists at a mining forum after Peru’s government authorized the start of activities earlier this month. The project has faced years of local opposition over water use and environmental concerns.
