About The Role
Ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems across the mine, processing plant, power distribution network—including overhead line systems—and all supporting infrastructure. Provide strong technical expertise in HV and LV distribution, motors, drives, instrumentation interfaces, and plant control systems to maintain efficient and stable operations.
You will support ongoing improvement initiatives by contributing to commissioning activities, defect elimination processes, and equipment reliability programs for all electrical assets. Uphold the highest electrical safety standards and reinforce a zero‑harm culture through rigorous application of Lock Out Tag Out Try Out, isolation procedures, and full regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct planned, preventive, and corrective maintenance on
- HV/LV switchgear (up to site-standard voltage levels)
- Transformers, MCCs, distribution boards
- Motors, soft starters, VFDs, UPS systems, and power factor correction units
- Lighting systems, earthing systems, and standby power systems
- Diagnose electrical faults using test instruments, interpret results, and take corrective actions.
- Support maintenance on processing plant equipment such as crushers, screens, conveyors, pumps, and automated systems.
- Assist in motor overhauls, cable replacements, terminations, and field equipment upgrades.
- Perform electrical isolations, LOTOTO procedures, and verification checks before work starts.
- Ensure compliance with site electrical standards, OEM requirements, and national/international regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments (JHAs), field-level hazard analysis, and participate in incident investigations.
- Verify earthing, bonding, and lightning protection systems are maintained and tested.
- Support precommissioning and commissioning of electrical systems including
- Switchgear energization
- Motor rotation checks and no-load tests
- Instrument loop checks
- Interlock verification and protection relay testing
- Validate as-built documentation, redlines, and handover packets from EPCM and contractors.
- Support ramp-up troubleshooting and defect elimination for major equipment.
- Complete work orders, inspection sheets, and job reports in the CMMS (SAP/Pronto or site equivalent).
- Update electrical drawings, SLDs, cable schedules, and equipment registers after modifications.
- Track electrical performance KPIs (MTTR, MTBF, downtime analysis).
- Report hazards, system deficiencies, and improvement opportunities to supervisors.
- Perform condition monitoring activities such as
- Infrared thermography
- Partial discharge assessments
- Insulation resistance and continuity tests
- Vibration and load analysis (with multi-disciplinary teams)
- Contribute to reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and root cause analysis (RCA).
- Recommend design modifications, upgrades, and improvements to enhance equipment reliability.
- Support procurement in specifying electrical spares, components, and tools.
- Collaborate closely with Mechanical, Instrumentation, Control, and Operations teams.
- Provide technical coaching to electricians and national/local personnel.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, planners, and the control room on job status and requirements.
- Participate in shutdown planning and execution, ensuring electrical readiness.
What You'll Bring
- Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrotechnology, or Electrical Trades (or equivalent).
- Recognized trade qualification as an Electrician (where applicable).
- HV Switching qualification (advantage).
- Relevant safety certifications LOTOTO, Working at Heights, Confined Space, First Aid.
- Instrumentation or automation training is an asset.
- 5–10+ years’ experience in electrical maintenance in mining, heavy industry, energy, or processing plants.
- Hands-on experience with
- HV/LV power distribution
- VFDs, soft starters, MCCs
- Motor control and protection systems
- Processing plants (crushers, conveyors, pumps) or mobile mining equipment interfaces
- Commissioning or greenfield project experience is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with SCADA/DCS, PLC interfaces, and instrument loops (advantage).
- Ability to read electrical drawings, SLDs, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Skilled with electrical test equipment (insulation testers, multimeters, relay testers, IR cameras).
- Knowledge of protection systems, circuit design, and electrical load calculations.
- Working knowledge of CMMS systems and basic computer competency.

About The Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
