About The Role
The Manager HME Maintenance oversees the mobile equipment maintenance function for all mining Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME), including XCMG 220t haul trucks, Komatsu 5500 excavators, dozers, graders, drills, and support equipment. The role ensures maximum fleet availability, optimal reliability, and safe execution of both workshop and field maintenance activities. This manager leads multidisciplinary teams in an active mining environment and ensures maintenance strategies support production targets and equipment lifecycle performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all maintenance activities for mining HME fleets, including servicing, repairs, component change-outs, and rebuilds.
- Manage the OEM maintenance contracts in place to ensure all safety, availability and cost targets are met
- Ensure clear development plans in place and implemented to transition to a fully Guinean workforce in the future
- Ensure all maintenance is conducted according to OEM specifications
- Manage workshop operations, component shops, tire bays, and field service crews.
- Manage all planned and breakdown response teams for the mining operation
- Manage field service logistics tooling, service trucks, parts availability, shift coverage.
- Implement and improve preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance programs.
- Work closely with the planning and reliability teams to optimize PM schedules and reduce unplanned failures.
- Ensure effective RCAs (Root Cause Analysis) are conducted and implement corrective actions across the fleet.
- Ensure strict compliance with mine safety protocols (LOTO, hot work, confined space, PIT working).
- Promote a strong safety culture across all maintenance teams and contractors.
- Develop annual maintenance budgets for HME and field services (OPEX & CAPEX).
- Monitor costs related to parts, labor, components, and contractor services.
- Improve cost efficiency through optimized maintenance strategies and component lifecycle tracking.
- Lead, train, and mentor teams of superintendents, technicians, supervisors, and planners in best practice HME maintenance
- Manage performance, training, and succession planning for Guinean workforce development .
- Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with Mining Operations, Dispatch, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams.
- Participate in daily production and maintenance planning meetings.
- Communicate equipment priorities and availability to production teams.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, or related technical field.
- Diploma or trade qualification with extensive HME experience may be accepted.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience managing HME maintenance in a mining environment (open‑pit strongly preferred).
- Strong experience with the maintenance of large mining fleets (Komatusu, XCMG Sandvik)
- Proven track record in leading workshop and field maintenance teams.
- Strong familiarity with CMMS, knowledge of reliability engineering principles and fleet performance analytics.
- Strong leadership, communication, and team‑building skills.
- Ability to perform under pressure in a fast‑paced production environment.

About The Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
