About The Role
The Central Control Room (CCR) team is responsible for monitoring and controlling all Operations execution tasks covering the value change from Development (activities to prepare an area for drilling) to Train load out (TLO) to ensure that the plan of the day is achieved. CCR team will comprise a multi-functional team comprising national and expatriate members. Early central control operations will use a temporary control room located in the Oueleba office facility focused on Mine Control, with the team moving to the permanent facility in June 2026. The permanent facility is in the central operations facility beside the main administration building.
Evolving monitoring and control maturity at Simandou from ‘basic’ to ‘leading practice’ will take several years. The phase to embed ‘basic’ maturity is referred to as the ‘commissioning phase’ of the CCR and is estimated to extend to late 2026 / 2027 (first ore through Train load out).
Reporting to the Senior Manager Technical and Strategy (or Manager Integration and Control), the Superintendent Central Control Room Operations will establish the control room function and lead the operation of the temporary control room and permanent CCR. Responsibilities during commissioning phase will include aspects of people (recruitment, onboarding and training) and process (operating philosophies, procedures and practices). Following commissioning phase, the Superintendent Central Control Room Operations lead the evolving control room function towards leading practice monitoring and control, including ownership of commissioned technology systems.
Responsibilities
- Lead development of, and approve, all operating philosophies, procedures and practices for CCR Operations during commissioning phase, including governance of management of change process.
- Accountable for development of training programs for all CCR controller roles, in collaboration with vendors, Simfer Training and D&T CoE.
- Accountable for recruitment and onboarding of all CCR roles.
- Development of Deputy Superintendent Central Control Operations to ensure succession plan
- Area owner of Central Control Room facility and associated infrastructure
- Govern the ongoing training and assessment of CCR controller team, including maintaining the CCR Operations competency matrix in collaboration with the Simfer training team.
- Primary point of contact, on behalf of CCR Operations Team, with Operational Readiness and Construction teams.
- Primary point of contact, on behalf of CCR Operations Teams, with Senior Simfer Leadership teams.
- Primary point of contact, on behalf of CCR Operations Team, with IS&T for applications in commissioning phase.
- Contract owner for CCR associated applications and hardware vendors for applications in commissioning phase or commissioned
- Contract owner for the technology hardware maintenance vendor.
- Other tasks as directed, from time to time, by Senior Manager Technical and Strategy (or Manager Integration and Control).
Qualifications And Experience
- Experience establishing new teams
- Bachelor’s degree in mining related discipline (for example Mining, Geo Sciences, Mechanical or Electrical) or equivalent Mining Operations industry experience (+15 yrs)
- Professional experience in mining or other heavy industry +10 yrs
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills
- Experience developing technical and practical competency in others through positive learning and development methods
- English Language (written and verbal)
- French language skills highly desirable
- Strong passion for development of national workforces
- Strong collaboration skills to align stakeholders to a common vision
- Ability to influence stakeholders to align to processes
- Strong teamwork and relationship-building skills.
- Project management skills and experience
- Be comfortable with VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) working environments
- Willingness to learn basic French language A2 Elementary (Describe environments, past/future events, basic conversations)

About The Simandou Project
The Simandou Iron Ore Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. It is Africa’s largest infrastructure and mining project and represents one of the largest known reserves of high-grade iron ore in the world.
Rio Tinto holds rights to Simandou Blocks 3 and 4 through SimFer, a joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). Construction of the mine, together with the associated rail and port infrastructure, is well underway with first production from the SimFer mine expected in 2025.
