South African platinum miner investigates fatality
A Village Main Reef (JSE:VIL) miner was killed on Saturday evening after falling underground, said the company in a statement.
The fall was related to a seismic event at its Blyvoor operation near Carletonville. The name of the miner was not released.
“The Department of Mineral Resources (‘’DMR’’) inspectorate in the Gauteng Province was alerted and an initial investigation has been conducted,” said the company.
“The inspectorate has issued a Section 54 instruction in relation to specific working areas impacted by geological structures, with the remainder of the mine operating as per normal. The management of Blyvoor is working closely with the DMR to minimize the duration of the stoppage on production at Blyvoor, while a full investigation continues.”
